about

Many have enjoyed J. S. Bach's Six Suites for Violoncello Solo. Cellists, bassists, violists, and even electronic artists have performed these pieces. Heard here for the first time on the electric violin as a complete cycle, this 300-year-old music reveals new beauty and meaning for modern listeners.

There is a short video documentary which you can view for free at:
www.theoryofpaul.net/bach

This project began during the Covid pandemic of 2020. For several years, Paul -- a historical instrument specialist -- performed the complete cycle of Bach Suites outdoors. Quarantined in his home, he felt it was time to record them. Without access to a studio, Paul recorded in his basement using only the line signal. Audio processing was applied creatively but sparingly. Each Suite is heard in a different virtual space. The inability to play in acoustic environments during quarantine motivated this decision, which will undoubtedly be controversial to some. The result is a risky experiment in adapting old music to new techniques -- an attempt to breathe life into Bach's musical poetics. With this project, Paul simultaneously pays homage to two great Bach interpreters who might not otherwise be heard in the same breath: Anner Bylsma and Wendy Carlos.

If you purchase this album, you will also receive as a bonus my multitrack recording of the "Spirituoso" (TWV 40:204/iv), a movement attributed to Telemann (but possibly by the musicologist Wilhelm Friedrich.)

Proceeds for this album will go entirely fund collaborations with Pittsburgh artists on future recording projects. That is to say: every dollar I earn on this project will go to paying Pittsburgh musicians for their time and effort working with me on my next release.

Please also consider purchasing a poster or piece of art from my friend Devon Osamu Tipp, over in the Prints section. Profits go to support the NAACP.
