chris-massa-fan Simply stated, Paul Miller's recordings of Bach's cello suites rank with the finest I've ever heard, period. The fact that they are played on electric violin only makes them more unique and memorable. This is great music played brilliantly and beautifully, and I recommend it without hesitation. Favorite track: Suite 1 in G Major, BWV 1007, Prelude.

tgeorgi Paul Miller's calm assured approach to these Suites of Bach is always a pleasure. My favourite tracks are the menuets, in which Bach tries out a new harmonic juxtaposition (new for 1720) of parallel major and minor. There is a quietness to these moments which I find especially appealing.
Favorite track: Suite 2 in D Minor, BWV 1008, Minuets I and II.

Many have enjoyed J. S. Bach's Six Suites for Violoncello Solo. Cellists, bassists, violists, and even electronic artists have performed these pieces. Heard here for the first time on the electric violin as a complete cycle, this 300-year-old music reveals new beauty and meaning for modern listeners.

This project began during the Covid pandemic of 2020. For several years, Paul -- a historical instrument specialist -- performed the complete cycle of Bach Suites outdoors. Quarantined in his home, he felt it was time to record them. Without access to a studio, Paul recorded in his basement using only the line signal. Audio processing was applied creatively but sparingly. Each Suite is heard in a different virtual space. The inability to play in acoustic environments during quarantine motivated this decision, which will undoubtedly be controversial to some. The result is a risky experiment in adapting old music to new techniques -- an attempt to breathe life into Bach's musical poetics. With this project, Paul simultaneously pays homage to two great Bach interpreters who might not otherwise be heard in the same breath: Anner Bylsma and Wendy Carlos.
